What are coaches looking for in a Division i Baseball player? 

 

Abilities

·         Center field – the best defensive outfielder, speed (6.8 or better in the sixty), good arm strength, hit for average, bunt, situational hit, hit for power is a bonus, steal and run the bases well.

·         Left field – the second best defensive outfielder, speed (7.0 or better), good arm strength, hit for average, bunt, handle the bat, power is a bonus, steal, run the bases well, intellect, instincts for the game.

·         Right field – good defensive outfielder, best outfield arm strength, speed (7.0 or better), hit for power and average, run the bases well.

·         Short stop – usually one of the best all around athletes, speed (7.0 or better), very good arm strength, best defensive infielder, great glove and hands, very quick feet, range, hit for average, bunt, handle the bat, power is a bonus, steal, run the bases well, intellect, instincts for the game.

·         Second base – good defensive infielder, quick hands, quick feet, good arm strength, great glove, speed (7.0 or better), steal, run the bases well, hit for average and some power, handle the bat, good instincts.

·         Third base – good defensive infielder, soft hands, good arm strength, excellent reactions, good feet, fair speed (7.2  or better), hit for power and average, guts (toughness), run the bases well.

·         First base – good glove, good feet, fair arm strength, good target (tall), run fair (7.2 or better), hit for power and average, run bases ok.

·         Catcher – great defense, good receiver, great blocker, quickness, leadership, good arm strength( 2.0 or better home to second pop time), flexibility, hit for average, handle the bat, power is a bonus, base running is a bonus.

·         Pitcher – excellent to very good arm strength, ability to throw strikes consistently, sound pitching mechanics, strong mental concentration, good defensive skills, quickness around the mound, running speed is a bonus, hitting is a bonus.

 

Arm Strengths        90+ mph = excellent,   85-90 mph = very good,  80-85 mph = good,

                            75-80  mph = fair,    70-75 mph average,    65-70  mph = below average
